BREAKING | Prizes Awarded at 2021 Klein International String Competition

22-year-old violist Yuchen Lu from China has been awarded 1st prize at the Irving M. Klein International String Competition, in San Francisco

A student of Carol Rodland at The Juilliard School and former student of Kim Kashkashian at the New England Conservatory, Yuchen is a former top prize winner at the Lionel Tertis International Viola Competition.

He will receive the grand prize, valued at US $13,000, which includes a cash prize as well as performances with the Peninsula and Santa Cruz Symphonies and the Gualala Arts Chamber Series.

2nd and 3rd prizes were awarded 18-year-old violinist Grace Huh and 16-year old cellist William Tan.

Joint 4th prizes, presented after the Semi-Final stage of this year's competition, were awarded to 20-year-old violinist Ria Honda from Japan and 17-year-old violinist Serin Park.

The "Pablo Casals Prize" for the best performance of work by Bach, in the Semi-Final stage, was awarded to violinist Grace Huh and the "Weiss Prize" for best performance of this year's newly commissioned work, "Bagatelles for Strings" by Sakari Dixon Vanderveer, was awarded to cellist William Tan.

This year's jury includes Charles Castleman, Glenn Dicterow, Karen Dreyfus, Daniel Stewart, Ian Swensen, Barbara Day Turner, and Sakari Dixon Vanderveer.

Previous Klein Competition major prize winners include: Vadim Gluzman, Alban Gerhardt, Jennifer Koh, Mark Kosower, Jennifer Frautschi, Oliver Herbert, Frank Huang, Robert deMaine, and VC Artist Tessa Lark.
