French-American conductor Pierre Monteux died on this day in 1964.
He served principal conducting positions with The Metropolitan Opera, Boston Symphony Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Orchestre Symphonique de Paris, San Francisco Symphony and the London Symphony Orchestra – and is remembered in history for having conducted the premiere performance of Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring' and 'Petrushka', Ravel's 'Daphnis et Chloe' and Debussy's 'Jeux'.
