Czech conductor and violinist Václav Neumann died on this day in 1995

He held principal conducting positions with the Komische Oper Berlin, Leipzig Gewandhausorchester and the Czech Philharmonic – and is particularly remembered as a champion of Czech music.

Three things you might not know about Vaclav Neumann:

  • Helped found the Smetana Quartet
  • He studied at the Prague Conservatory with Josef Micka
  • He briefly led the Stuttgart Opera from 1970-1973, succeeding Ferdinand Leitner
