University of Cincinnati Announce 2019 Zemlinsky Composers' Prize Recipient

The University of Cincinnati has announced Japanese composer Aya Yoshida as the recipient of the 2019 Zemlinsky Prize

The University of Cincinnati’s College-Conservatory of Music has this week announced 27-year-old Japanese composer, Aya Yoshida as the recipient of the prestigious 2019 Zemlinsky Compositional Prize.

Awarded only every six or seven years, since 1990, Aya will receive US $30,000, a commercially produced recording of her new orchestral work, ‘Double Face‘ – plus a new commission.

This year’s international panel of judges included composers: Missy Mazzoli, Colin Matthews and Carl Vine.

“Aya Yoshida’s piece came out on top from a very impressive line-up … it was good to see the unanimity of choice between a panel of composers all with very different stylistic personalities,” Jury member, Colin Matthews has this week said.

“This daring work really communicated a mini-world of fantastic orchestral colours and showed true originality, combined with skillful orchestration and a well-balanced approach to form,” Jury member, Missy Mazzoli has this week said.

Previous recipients include: Ulrich Kreppein, Moritz Eggert and Narong Prangcharoen.
