Classical Music Power Couple Accused of Drugging & Raping Young Opera Singer [#MeToo]

A police complaint has been filed alleging American countertenor David Daniels and his partner raped a Rice University vocal student in 2010

The New York Daily News has today reported a police complaint has been filed in Houston, Texas, alleging American countertenor David Daniels and his partner, conductor Scott Walters drugged and raped a then 23-year-old Rice University vocal student - in a hotel room following a party at the Houston Grand Opera in 2010.

The alleged victim, Grammy-award winning baritone Samuel Schultz has said he was left unconscious but woke up the next day in a strange bed, disoriented and bleeding.

“I woke up in a bed alone, completely naked …” Schultz has told The Daily News.

“I was sore and I didn’t know why … I made my way to the bathroom to figure out why I hurt … I was bleeding from my rectum … I became numb … I was paralyzed with fear,” he has said.

The victim has indicated in the days following the alleged attack he discussed the incident with a Rice University employee - but was frightened of the repercussions and decided, at the time, against reporting the experience to police.

David Daniels has performed leading roles at the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, Santa Fe Opera, Opera Philadelphia and the Vienna State Opera - and currently serves a Professorship on faculty at the University of Michigan School of Music.

Daniels, 52 and Walters, 36 were married in 2014 by United States Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

“We are deeply concerned to learn this news … it is very much in opposition to the professional environment we strive to provide … ” Houston Grand Opera Managing Director Perryn Leech has today said in a statement.

“We will cooperate with any law enforcement inquiries and launch our own investigation once we know the full range of the allegations,” he has said.

Daniels and Walters have both claimed the accusations are false.
