Prizewinners Announced at the Cavatina Intercollegiate Chamber Music Competition
The Fibonacci Quartet from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama received first prize
The 2023 edition of the CAVATINA Intercollegiate Chamber Music Competition has recently come to a close. The competition, which is held annually at London's Wigmore Hall, is open to chamber ensembles from conservatoires across the UK.
Each year, the competition alternates between a focus on the string quartet and the piano trio. In 2023, the chosen quartets all performed a set work: Beethoven’s String Quartet in B flat, Op. 18 No. 6.
The Fibonacci Quartet from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama was named the winner for 2023. The ensemble is comprised of Luna DeMol and Krystof Kohout (violins), Elliot Kempton (viola), and Kosta Popovic (cello).
The runners-up were the Treske Quartet from the Royal Northern College of Music, whose players are Oliver Baily and Mollie Wrafter (violins), Abigail Hammett (viola), and Robert Wheatley (cello).
Originally endowed in 1961, the Gerard Heller Memorial Quartet Fund and Rosemary Rapaport founded the competition in memory of Rapaport's husband, Gerard Heller. In 2012, the competition was given a fresh endowment by CAVATINA Chamber Music Trust.
The competition was dedicated to one of CAVATINA's two founders, Pamela Majaro, who sadly died in February 2016.
The competition was streamed live here on The Violin Channel, and you can watch the performances here.
