ON THIS DAY | Prokofiev's 2nd Violin Concerto Premiered in 1935
The work is said to reflect Prokofiev's nomadic concert-tour life, with the main theme composed in Paris, the second movement in Voronezh, the orchestration in Baku, and the premiere in Madrid
Sergei Prokofiev's Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor Op. 63 premiered in 1935.
Written shortly after his return to Russia, Prokofiev's second violin concerto was his last Western commission following fifteen years in the United States and Paris.
Despite the growing political unrest in the Soviet Union, Prokofiev's desire to return for career opportunities brought him back home to Moscow in 1935. Prokofiev wrestled with his love of his homeland and the fury of the Stalinist government, but his creativity flourished.
Prokofiev's two violin concertos are the anchors of violin repertoire and demonstrate virtuosity and lyricism inherent for the instrument.
The first performance was given by French violin virtuoso Robert Soetens with the Madrid Symphony Orchestra.
