Scottish Cellist Alexander Cameron has Died, Aged 100
He was principal cello of the London Philharmonic Orchestra for over 15 years in the late 1960s to 1980s
“We are saddened to hear of the death of Alexander Cameron, one day before his 101st birthday,” the LPO recently posted on Facebook. “Alexander was the LPO’s Principal Cellist 1967-83 and he continued to play with us until 1988. Our thoughts are with his loved ones at this sad time.”
Born in 1922, Cameron studied with Douglas Cameron at London’s Royal Academy of Music (RAM), where he also became a professor and fellow.
Before his position with the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO), he served as principal cellist of the Royal Opera House under the direction of Sir Georg Solti. He was appointed principal cello of the LPO in 1967.
He was often featured solo with the orchestra on many noted recordings and with conductors including Sir Neville Marriner.
