Sistema Europe Youth Orchestra 2022 Perform in Spain

Over a hundred young musicians from around Europe are performing in Madrid around the motto, “We play to transform the world,” from July 5–14, 2022

Sistema Europe and Acción Por La Música Foundation have collaborated for the sixth edition of the Sistema Europe Youth Orchestra (SEYO) which was postponed from 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. SEYO’s residency will be held in Madrid, Spain, between July 5 and 14 this summer.

SEYO musicians will take to Madrid’s Auditorio Nacional de Música and Plaza del Colón to showcase the transformative power of music and participate in rehearsals conducted by leading industry professionals. Additionally, the intercultural exchange will commit to promoting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Uniting emerging musicians and teachers from Sistema Europe’s programs, SEYO is inspired by the work of El Sistema — a social inclusion and music education project created by José Antonio Abreu in Venezuela nearly 50 years ago.

The program is now included in over 70 countries worldwide and has esteemed musicians and educators advocating its teachings, including conductor Gustavo Dudamel and violinist Nicola Benedetti.

Since its inception in 2013, SEYO has performed at La Scala in Milan, Birmingham’s Symphony Hall, London’s Royal Festival Hall, Philharmonie de Paris’ Grande Salle Pierre Boulez, and recently at the European Parliament and Ópera national du Rhin.

To conclude this summer's residency, over 140 young musicians from 17 European countries aged between 12 and 20, will perform in the “SEYO 2022: We play to transform the world” concert on July 14.

This event will be directed by acclaimed conductors Ron Davis Alvarez, Lara Diloy, José Ángel Salazar-Marín, and Jhoanna Sierralta in works by Bach, Sibelius, Holst, and Mussorgsky.

Activities kicked off on July 5 with discussions around music and protecting cultural rights by experts alongside the High Commissioner against Child Poverty government body, and social justice organizations Fundación Gabeiras and Red Música Social, among others.

“With the pandemic putting our lives on hold for more than two years, it is more than exciting to see the [SEYO] annual summer residency thrive once again,” said president and founder of Sistema Europe, Marshall Marcus in the press release.

“We play to transform the world. Our common future is woven from our intertwined identities and aspirations for a better life,” added Fundación Acción Social por la Música founder, María Guerrero. “A life in harmony with others and with our planet. This community of young musicians will, likewise, weave their melodies to create beauty together: a beauty that expresses their vision of a new world. The concert will be a transformative event that trespasses the frontiers of mere enjoyment to invite us to move forward together.”
