VC Artist Stefan Jackiw’s Bow Snaps During Concerto Performance

The violinist recovered from an unexpected surprise at a performance with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra

VC Artist violinist Stefan Jackiw recently performed the UK premiere of the Ukrainian-born composer Reinhold Gliere’s Violin Concerto with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

A third of the way through the concerto, however, Jackiw's bow suddenly snapped in two. The nearly 200-year-old bow has been played by Stefan for over 20 years.

Recovering elegantly, the VC Artist turned to the concertmaster to trade bows and continued on. Watch the moment below!

A graduate of Harvard University and the New England Conservatory, Stefan has made his solo debuts with the New York Philharmonic, Cleveland Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Philadelphia Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, St. Louis Symphony, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, and the London Philharmonic.

Jackiw’s 2022-23 season includes his return to the Cleveland Orchestra performing Britten’s Violin Concerto with Thomas Søndergård, and to the Vancouver Symphony performing Brahms with Otto Tausk. He will also appear at the 92NY with cellist Alisa Weilerstein and pianist Daniil Trifonov.

Jackiw tours frequently with his musical partners, pianist Conrad Tao and cellist Jay Campbell, as part of the Junction Trio. The group will embark on a multi-city tour that includes the group’s Celebrity Series of Boston debut, alongside performances in New York City, San Francisco, Washington DC, and more.

He also enjoys collaborating with pianist Jeremy Denk with whom he has toured the complete Ives Violin Sonatas, which the pair recorded for future release on Nonesuch Records. He also recently recorded Beethoven’s Triple Concerto with Inon Barnatan, Alisa Weilerstein, Alan Gilbert and Academy St. Martin in the Fields.
