Violinist Anne Akiko Meyers Named Trustee of New York’s Juilliard School

The American violinist is one of six Juilliard alumni on its Board of Trustees

The Juilliard School has welcomed violinist Anne Akiko Meyers as a new board member and trustee alongside singer songwriter Jon Batiste. They will both join the newly elected vice-chairs, entrepreneur Julie Choi and actress Laura Linney.

“Extraordinary alumni musicians Jon Batiste and Anne Akiko Meyers [are] both luminous artists and powerful role models,” said Juilliard’s president Damian Woetzel. “We are all looking forward to deepening our work with them in furthering the mission of the school.”

“It is with great pleasure to announce that I have been named a The Juilliard School trustee at my alma mater,” Meyers posted on Facebook. “At the invitation of legendary teacher, Dorothy DeLay, at age 14, my journey began at this incredible institution and today, with Damian Woetzel and esteemed colleagues, an opportunity to bring fresh, innovative vision. It’s a new day!!”

“It is so inspiring to see these extraordinary Juilliard graduates take on new responsibilities at the school,” Woetzel added. “These four alums have each achieved exceptionally in their respective fields and are deeply committed to Juilliard and the students of today.”

Growing up in Southern California, Meyers attended the Colburn School of Performing Arts, Indiana University, and The Juilliard School. Her mentors included Alice and Eleonore Schoenfeld, Josef Gingold, Dorothy DeLay, Felix Galimir, and Masao Kawasaki. Now an internationally acclaimed violinist, Meyers performs solo with leading orchestras and in recitals around the globe.

She has made many television appearances, and as a champion of living composers and new music, recently premiered and performed Fandango by Arturo Márquez with Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall, Walt Disney Hall, and the Auditorio Nacional in Mexico City. Among her awards are an Avery Fisher Career Grant and a Distinguished Alumna Award from Colburn School.

Her upcoming concert engagements include the Los Angeles, National, Albany, Detroit, Nashville, Princeton, San Diego, San Jose, Tucson, and Wichita symphony orchestras. Having released over 40 recordings, her latest includes “Shining Night” on Avie Records and “Mysterium,” which comprises newly imagined violin and choral music by J.S. Bach

Meyers plays a 1741 “Ex-Vieuxtemps” Guarneri del Gesù violin with Larsen Il Canone Soloist Strings . She is a Larsen artist.
