New Classical Music Series to Take Place in London Clubs

The Noisenights series brings international soloists to unconventional venues such as cabaret bars, converted warehouses, and nightclubs

Noisenights, a new, informal classical series that takes place in London clubs and bars, has announced the lineup for its upcoming winter series. The series is run by the organization Through The Noise, in partnership with sheet music subscription app Nkoda.

The series aims to present high-quality performances in informal settings, and in doing so, free the performers from some of the programming restrictions that they might usually face in a more established performance setting.

The Noisenights Winter Series is set to feature cross-genre cellist Abel Selacoe playing Baroque and contemporary African music, while a second concert will showcase cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason and composer-pianist Harry Baker. The pair will mix works by Boulanger and Bach with jazz standards and folk-song improvisations.

The concert format of a Noisenight sees the featured artists play two slots, one in the early evening and one later at night. Each concert is crowdfunded: audience members buy tickets in advance in order to secure the project's financial viability, and can keep track of the funding's progress on the Noisenights website.

The concept has already found success earlier in 2021. Noisenight One featured violinist Max Baillie and cellist Laura van der Heijden paired the Kodály’s Duo with a selection of folk music arranged by the performers. This was followed up with Noisenight Two, in which the Chineke! Duo (made up of violinist Sarah Daramy-Williams and violist Natalia Senior-Brown) performed music from their African Concert Series program. This included works by Errollyn Wallen, Joseph Bologne, and Rachel Barton-Pine, alongside pieces by Mozart, Schubert, and Martinů.

"I am really excited to be performing this program with Harry Baker in such a unique venue," said Kanneh-Mason of his upcoming Noisenight. "As performers, we respond so much to the space we are in, not just acoustically, but the energy of the room and the people in it. This will be a special opportunity to share music we love in a new setting."

"After an overwhelming response to the first two Noisenights, we’ve been compelled to go bigger with Noisenights three and four," said Jack Bazalgette, the co-founder and artistic director of Through the Noise. "Abel, Sheku, and Harry have constructed ground-breaking programs specially for these great venues. On top of that, we know how special it is to have an audience made up of crowdfunding backers: every member of Noisenight audience has made that concert possible, which is a beautiful thing to be a part of. We’re sure these two nights will be unforgettable."
